The UK-first Vanta alternative.
Vanta is a strong product built around US certification prep. Assura is a different bet: your whole security programme in one place - 20 frameworks for one platform fee, scoring that judges maturity rather than ticking configs, and risk priced in pounds so the board actually reads it.
Evaluating platforms? Bring your shortlist to the call - we'll tell you honestly where each fits.
Where the two platforms differ.
Both automate evidence collection from your stack. The differences are in what gets measured, what's included, and who the product is really built for.
| Assura | Vanta | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | UK organisations of 10-500 without a security team - and the consultancies that serve them | Venture-backed startups and mid-market companies, typically chasing SOC 2 first |
| Frameworks | All 20 included in one platform fee - Cyber Essentials to DORA, plus a custom framework builder | Broad catalogue; framework coverage is typically tiered and priced into the package |
| Scoring approach | Judges control maturity with written reasoning, grounded in evidence with confidence provenance | Automated tests verify configurations against expected values - pass or fail |
| Risk | Living risk register plus financial exposure modelling in pounds (ranges, not false precision), incidents and tabletop exercises | Risk management is available; quantification in currency is not the product's centre of gravity |
| Programme scope | Whole programme: assessments, risk, people, suppliers, incidents, exercises, policies, board reporting, an agent that briefs you each morning | Deep on certification workflows, trust and access reviews; a strong compliance core |
| UK footing | UK-built: Cyber Essentials native, UK policy documents, pounds-first exposure, UK English throughout | US-headquartered; UK frameworks supported within a global catalogue |
| Trust page & questionnaires | Public trust page with a guarded Q&A assistant; inbound questionnaires drafted from your live posture | Trust Center and questionnaire automation are established and mature |
| Pricing model | Scoped to your organisation, one fee, every framework - no per-framework charges | Package-based; independent buyer intel puts typical annual spend in the five figures (USD) |
Fairness note: Vanta is the category leader for a reason, and if you want a US-auditor-centric SOC 2 motion with a large partner marketplace, it's a credible default. This comparison reflects publicly available information as of July 2026 and our honest read of where each product's strengths lie - tell us if you think we've got something wrong.
Configs can pass while controls fail.
Checkbox automation asks "is the setting on?". Assura asks "does this control actually protect you?" - and writes its reasoning down. Every score carries provenance showing whether it rests on a live check, a document, or someone's say-so, and you can override it with your judgement on the record.
- Maturity scored 0-4 with written reasoning, not pass/fail
- Evidence-graded confidence: live check beats document beats assertion
- Your overrides are recorded - the system learns your context
Frameworks aren't add-ons here.
Your customers decide which frameworks you need next, so charging you again for each one punishes growth. Every Assura plan includes all 20 - and cross-framework mapping means the Cyber Essentials work you did in March pre-fills the ISO 27001 push in September.
- One platform fee, every framework, including new ones we add
- Mapping carries evidence and answers across frameworks
- A custom builder for the frameworks only your industry cares about
Built for the board, not just the auditor.
Certification prep tools speak auditor. Assura also speaks director: exposure modelled in pounds with honest ranges, a Boardroom view that reads like a report rather than a dashboard, and a weekly digest your MD will actually open. Security spend gets approved when the person approving it understands the number.
- FAIR-lite exposure modelling in pounds, dollars or euros
- Board packs exported straight from live data
- A morning briefing that says what changed and what needs a human
Asked and answered.
Is Assura a drop-in replacement for Vanta?
For the core jobs - connect your stack, assess against frameworks, publish a trust page, answer questionnaires - yes, and you'll gain risk quantification, incidents, exercises and board reporting on top. If your process depends on Vanta's US auditor marketplace or their partner ecosystem specifically, we'll say so on the call rather than pretend otherwise.
We just need SOC 2 fast. Should we still look at Assura?
SOC 2 is one of our 20 frameworks, with the same guided assessment, evidence automation and readiness view. The honest difference: Vanta's SOC 2 auditor network is deeper today. If SOC 2 is genuinely the only thing you'll ever need, evaluate both; if SOC 2 is the first of several demands heading your way, one platform fee covering all of them changes the maths.
Can we migrate work we've already done?
Yes. Import existing assessment workbooks and spreadsheets, connect your stack, and prior answers become the starting point rather than lost work. Most teams see their real posture the same day.
What does Assura cost?
Pricing is scoped to your organisation's size and stack - book a 15-minute intro and you'll get a straight number. Every framework is included at every level, so the quote you get is the quote for the whole programme.
